Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain found fame as the hero of Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg. With his brother Thomas by his side, Colonel Chamberlain and the men of the 20th Maine held the makeshift Union line before their bold counterattack saw off the Confederate threat to the left flank of the Federal Army.
Thomas fought with the 20th Maine throughout the war, ending it with the rank of Lieutenant colonel, while Joshua went on to conduct the formal Confederate infantry surrender ceremony at Appomattox Courthouse.
